This is the third annual year of doing a daily advent devotional with my best friend Daria. I don’t even know how it started the first year, but it’s become the highlight of the season every time.

At first, Christmas doesn’t seem all that complicated, especially how we’ve dulled it down with elves and stockings. But the true message is quite profound.

God became a man, took on flesh, lived among us, died for us. It all starts with the humble birth of God as a baby. God is with us. He is here, now just maybe not in the way we’d like or think.

The thing about Jesus’ birth is that few people actually got to witness it. Only a small few were attentive enough to read the stars and catch that it truly was the savior of the world in that small manager in Bethlehem.

I wonder if even amidst all the icicle lights, secret Santa gifts and Santa Claus photos, we can miss it too.

I know I have.

There have been many Christmases where I get my gifts two days before, busy my schedule, and by the time it gets to Christmas I realized I missed it.

The joy of Christmas isn’t just found on the day, it’s found in the anticipation leading up to it.

I think the whole season of waiting is supposed to symbolize the longing in our own hearts for the kingdom come.

And at the same time, we realize that God is with us, now.
